How It Works

Return-to-Duty Process Overview

The Return-to-Duty process follows a regulated sequence under 49 CFR Part 40. Here is the path at a glance — your SAP directs the specifics of your plan.

  1. 1

    SAP Evaluation

Meet with a qualified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) for a face-to-face evaluation and recommendations.

  2. 2

    Education / Treatment

Complete the education or treatment the SAP recommends with a qualified provider.

  3. 3

    SAP Follow-Up Evaluation

The SAP re-evaluates and determines whether you have complied with their recommendations.

  4. 4

    Return-to-Duty Test

Take a DOT return-to-duty test that meets DOT requirements before resuming safety-sensitive duties.

  5. 5

    Return to Duty

Once requirements are met, your employer may return you to safety-sensitive duty.

  6. 6

    Follow-Up Testing

Complete the follow-up testing plan the SAP sets for you. Please call for more information.

This overview is general. Specific requirements — including the follow-up testing plan and its duration — are set under DOT rules and by your SAP. Please call for more information.
